When I first heard the sad news that Joe Kubert had passed, I immediately wondered what he was working on. He was never not working, you just knew he was in the middle of something. And that’s such a bittersweet notion. On one hand, you have this unfinished piece of work (which just happened to be a Sgt. Rock story) and on the other hand you have a man who was drawing for his entire life, right up until the end. We should all be so lucky.
Joe was a remarkable man and artist, with an unparalled body of work that spans several decades. But even considering everything he did on the page, the most important part of his legacy has to be the school he founded, and how that changed the lives and careers of so many.
This drawing took forever, by the way. I figured it would be intimidating to draw one of Joe’s characters, but man… Thanks for everything, Joe.
